  1. It is important for people to understand and be tolerant of other cultures, especially in the US, because we're a growing country. There are alot of people immigrating and fleeing here trying to live the 'american dream' and future generations are going to be different and more intermixed with other cultures than our parents were. So we need to learn and understand other cultures to give them the same rights of freedom that we have now. The need for intercultural communication affects our ability to communicate effectively by the differences in every persons culture. It's hard for us to communicate interculturally because of the differences of each culture, such as language, traditions, and how women are treated. This is another example of why we need to learn about other cultures in order to be respectful of them when communicating interculturally.

  2. 1) It is important to be tolerant and understanding of different cultures so that we don't come off as ignorant. If we have morals than we must show our kindness to everyone around us. It would reflect the United States as a whole if we were to be intolerant towards other cultures. We are a huge nation and we wouldn't want to come off as ignorant or we will lose our connections with many other cultures.
    2) For business, it is imperative to communicate effectively because trade is important for our economy. Intercultural communication has helped to stimulate our economy and to create relations among different people all around the world. Without effective communication, our world would have many conflicts therefore it is important that we maintain healthy, quality intercultural communications.

  3. It is important to be understanding and tolerant of other cultures because the customs in each country are very diverse and the understanding of each country's customs may be difficult to understand. Sometimes what is acceptable behavior in one culture may be considered offensive in another. Not being tolerant of another culture puts you in a position in which you cannot be offended by someone who does not tolerate yours. Acceptance of other traditions and cultures are what make our country diverse and unique.

It is important to communicate between cultural backgrounds in order to understand the importance of each other's behavior and to understand how to avoid being offensive to the other person and his or her cultural beliefs. By communicating positively between cultures we show acceptance for one another and show an openness to other beliefs, ideas, and ways of life. I believe that in order to be respected you have to give it. Communicating allows for this respect to take place.

  4. 1.) I think that it is important to be understanding and be tolerant of other cultures because first and foremost I think its essential that people are nice to each other. If you make an effort to understand someone else's culture then you can relate to them more and create a good relationship with them. This way there won't be any ignorance on either end and there won't be any harsh feelings within the different cultures.

2.) I don't know if the need for intercultural communication necessarily affects our ability to communicate, but it does effect how we communicate. Wanting to communicate and be understood by other cultures is difficult especially if there is a language barrier and it makes it a lot harder to form a relationship with someone you can't understand well. But even if there isn't a language barrier, the difference in culture can still effect communication. This can be tied to the first question as well because understanding and tolerating other cultures affects how effective the communication is.

  5. 1) I think it is important to be tolerant of other cultures because we are a diverse country and it is important to understand others beliefs and customs. If you are unaware of that cultures customs or beliefs, you may come off as offensive or ignorant. Being tolerable of other cultures is what makes the United States known as a "melting pot" and a place where people can live out their American dream.

    2) According to the textbook intercultural communication is defined as a symbolic, interpretive, transactional, contextual process in which people from different cultures create shared meanings. Communication can be difficult when there is a language barrier because it would only be one way and the other person would not be understanding. Being tolerable is the main aspect in communicating effectively with those from other cultures. Being accepting also plays a role in effective communication. Respect for others and their beliefs comes as a two way system, so if you respect them, they will be more likely to respect you and your beliefs.

  6. 1. It is important for people to be understanding of other cultures to show respect for them. Everyone’s culture is different and they act differently towards other people, but it doesn’t mean that we should be disrespectful to them. If we are not understanding of their cultures, then how will we learn anything about their culture? When we are tolerant and understanding of them, we are able to learn more about their country.
    2. Intercultural communication is an important part for relationships. It plays a major role in our country as well. It is difficult to communicate in relationships if there is a language barrier between spouses. There will also be problems when communicating with families of the spouse. So, even though they can communicate it is difficult for them to do so.

  7. 1. Being understanding and tolerant about other cultures is important because it shows respect. Some cultures can be vastly different from yours and may be difficult for you to understand, but the same goes for the other side. They probably won't understand your culture anymore than you understand theirs. You have to be understanding to keep from insulting a person.
    2. Intercultural communication comes into play a lot, especially in the US. With the US being a mixed country of people from all over, communication is important because if there is a language barrier, it'll be hard to communicate. Also, with the differences in culture, if you are not careful you may insult a person unknowingly, if you do not properly learn.

  8. 1. I think being understanding and aware of other cultures is important because without that understanding there would be a great amount of ignorance. Ignorance sets up a narrow minded way of thinking and once you get into the mind set of nonacceptance and ignorance we start to judge only on the little details and facts that we do know. It is important to be tolerant and understanding of other cultures so that you don't generalize and judge a culture with a close mind. We must want to understand other people's cultures and not judge them any differently or criticize their ways of life because it is different than theirs.
    2. Intercultural communication is important because it helps understand and communicate with people all over the world easier. Communication among other cultures is important especially in America because the American society is so diverse. We have an abundance of cultures and people living here in America and we should be able to communicate with them.

  9. 1.) Being understanding and tolerant of other cultures is very important in any situation or country, but it is especially an important factor here in the United States. The U.S is a growing country and there are many people here with different cultural backgrounds just because we are such a diverse country and because a lot of people move here for jobs or just to pursue their dreams. If we weren't understanding or tolerant of other cultures we would be looked at as "ignorant" or "selfish" because we don't care about anyone else's backgrounds but our own. We also need to be understanding and tolerant of other cultures because it is the respectful thing to do and we would want others to respect our cultures. The U.S also communicates with other countries often so if we weren't tolerant of the different backgrounds and cultures of others we could lose our ties with other countries.

2.)The need for intercultural communication affects our ability to communicate effectively in many ways. First off, if there wasn't a need for intercultural communication there would be a huge language barrier between all different types of cultural backgrounds and we wouldn't be able to communicate with one another in the ways that we need to. You could also insult someone if you weren't careful and didn't know their background or what is insulting to them and what isn't because you aren't aware of the differences in cultures. We need to be tolerant and accepting of other cultures and be able to communicate effectively with them because of all of the ties we have with other countries and just because that is the respectful thing to do.

  10. 1. It is important for people to be understanding and tolerant of other cultures because we have to respect those people's beliefs and traditions. Since we live in such a diverse world it is important to be open to other people's cultures and let them have freedom. Culture is what makes us who we are and enables us to relate to different groups of people.

    2. The need for intercultural communication affects our ability to communicate effectively because of our differences. We all have different beliefs, values, norms, and social practices. Sometimes we feel that we shouldn't say or do something that might be inappropriate to what they believe, so this affects our ability to communicate effectively.

  11. 1.) I think it is important to be understanding of other cultures because it shows respect. We want people to respect our culture, so we need to respect theirs. If you cant respect or tolerate someone else's differences than it shows you to be an ignorant person. America is a very diverse place and you have to interact with people on a daily basis that are different than you so it is essential for you to learn about other peoples' cultures so you understand why they do certain things.

2.) Intercultural communication is very important because it is essential to be able to communicate with people who have different backgrounds then you. Intercultural communication is difficult because of language barriers, not understanding their traditions, and a lack of understanding their ideas and beliefs. In America it is very important for us all to learn how to accept each other and be able to learn about each others beliefs so we can communicate more easily.

  12. 1) It is important to understand and be tolerant of other cultures because you need to respect everyone. People have their beliefs and reasoning for everything and if you want them to know yours you should know theirs. It is very bad is you do not and could come off as a very rude person to them.
    2) Intercultural communication is important to communication because you need to understand how to talk to people who communicate differently then you do. The respect of how and when to talk to someone who is from another culture is very important with them liking you.

  13. 1. It is important for people to be understanding and tolerant of other cultures because there are always going to be people around you that are different from you. There are so many different cultures and there are so many people with different beliefs and customs that you're going to be the odd man out when you're the only one not being respectful. By trying to understand different cultures, you are growing more as a person.

    2. The need for intercultural communication affects our ability to communicate effectively in many ways. One of the ways is that the United States is such a diverse place so there are different types of cultures working at the same companies or in the same department of a business. You want to be able to communicate freely with your team and not have any awkwardness just because you never learned how to communicate with people from other cultures besides your own.

  14. 1) It is important to understand and be tolerant of other cultures because everybody has their beliefs and you need to respect that. With todays world being so diverse, you are bound to come into contact with someone from a different culture and you need to resect their culture and they will respect yours. If you aren't understanding, then you come off as a rude and inconsiderate person.

    2) Intercultural communication is important because it is vital in communicating with someone form a different culture. If you are on a business trip and are able to understand the way the other culture communicates, then you can get the work done without any hiccups.

  15. 1. It is important to understand and be tolerant of other cultures because we live in a very diverse world. It's We should respect others beliefs and traditions because we are always going to be meeting people who are different then us. If you want someone to respect your culture, you should start by respecting theirs.

2.Intercultural communication is important because it is very essential in communicating with people from different cultural back rounds. Every culture is different and it can be very helpful when you are talking to someone who has different beliefs, values, norms, and social practices than you do. You do not want to offend someone because you didn't know something is considered disrespectful in their culture when it may not be in yours.

  16. 1. To be successfull in any occupation, understanding culture is vital. Culture affects peoples behaviors and ideas. Taking into account why cultures differ in the ways that they do makes it much easier to make sense of other's actions. Looking at the big picture to make decisions and taking into account these beliefs of cultures will lead to a happier work environment and make it easier for other cultures to feel welcome. This shows immense respect. Someone who is not tolerant of other cultures comes off extremely ignorant. There are reasons for everything people believe, understanding these reasons and the history behind someone's culture is important.

    2. The demand for intercultural communication is high, especially as the number of different cultures within the US rises. Intercultural communication should be a required field of study in the near future because to communicate effectively, one must understand their counterpart's point of view and the reasons behind his or her beliefs. Another thing that effects our ability to communicate is the language barrier between cultures. America is extremely egocentric, and many people are not bilingual, unlike other countries.

  17. It is important to understand and tolerate different cultures because the U.S. is a very diverse country and we are going to meet so many different people no matter where we might be. Culture is a strong part of many peoples lives, it influences their views, values, and simply their personality. If we do not understand different cultures we will not be able to relate to one another and it will negatively effect the way we work and the relationships we build. Understanding culture will make us a better well-rounded person.

The need for intercultural communication affects our ability to communicate because there are many people of different cultures working together in their occupations. In order to effectively do our job we need to be able to communicate with each other. I agree with what Corrigan said above that intercultural communication should be a required field of study because America is becoming more and more diverse and we need to be able to understand this if we want to succeed in the work force.

  18. Being understanding and tolerant of other cultures is absolutely necessary in our modern world. In the workplace, at school, and in the general public we encounter may different ethnicities. Developments in our careers and other areas of our life will not happen unless we can communicate and understand other cultures. For example, let's say James gets hired by a Japanese man who preserves most of his Japanese culture while living in the U.S. John should know if it is appropriate to shake his boss's hand. He should know both what his boss values, and what he strongly opposes. If John understands his boss's prospective of the world, and his boss understands the same, it is much more possible to create a strong professional connection.
Certain attitudes toward intercultural understanding can effect our ability to communicate effectively. Many people have prejudice views and stereotypes. This block our ability to get to know an individual for who they are uniquely. I also think many people still practice some ethnocentrism. I think that some people believe that where they grew up, how they grew up, and the way they were raised is somehow superior to other cultures. This idea is ancient and not acceptable in the modern world. To made any developments, whether local or global, personal or professional, we need to overstep the general attitudes about intercultural communication and step out into the world with both feet.
